Senior Citizens Allowance

Under an MOU with the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, Pension Office was assigned as the central agency to disburse various State-funded pension effective from April 2011. In February 2014, Pension Office was assigned with the disbursement of Senior Citizen Allowance – a state-funded benefit provided to Maldivians above 65 years of age who do not receive monthly pension benefits of MVR 5,000.

Senior Citizens Allowance is an allowance given to Maldivian Citizens over 65 years of age, whose pension income (state funded) is less than MVR 5000. The purpose of this allowance is to ensure that every Maldivian Citizen above the age of 65 years receives a pension amount (state funded) not less than MRV 5000.

Those who meet the following conditions are eligible for Senior Citizens Allowance.

  • Should be a Maldivian citizen
  • Should reside in the Maldives.
  • Should be 65 years or older
  • Should NOT be in the full time care of the State or Incarcerated upon conviction
  • Sum of all state funded pensions he/she receives should be less than MVR 5000
  • Individuals who do not receive pension from a state funded pension scheme will receive MVR 5000 as Senior Citizens Allowance
  • Individuals receiving pensions from any state funded pension scheme will receive the balance after deducting sum of all pensions (state funded) he/she receives from MVR 5000

No. Basic Pension is a pension scheme administered under the Pension Act of the Maldives. Senior Citizen Allowance is an allowance introduced by the government to top-up the pension amount received by senior citizens to MRV 5000.

Claim

If you are receiving any pension through Pension Office, you are not required to apply for Senior Citizens Allowance. The amount you are entitled to receive as Senior Citizens Allowance will be calculated based on the information available with Pension Office and will be deposited to your bank account.
If you are not receiving any other Pension through Pension Office, you need to apply for Senior Citizens Allowance through ‘Pension Applicants Information form’.

If you are not receiving any other pension through Pension Office, you can apply for Senior Citizens Allowance 6 months before reaching pensionable age (65 years).
If you are already receiving any other pension through Pension Office you are not required to apply for Senior Citizens Allowance.
